Additional information

AMI — Assistência Médica Internacional — is a Portuguese humanitarian NGO founded in 1984, and this issue was part of Portugal's ongoing practice of dedicating circulating commemorative coins to domestic civil society organizations. The 2008 date places it within a run of similar €1.50 bimetallic and copper-nickel pieces INCM produced for causes ranging from the Red Cross to environmental groups, none of which achieved significant circulation and most of which were absorbed directly into collector sets.
