Obverse description Printed in black with a yellow-gold underprint; the Treasury seal and serial numbers rendered in yellow. A central intaglio vignette presents a right-facing bust portrait of Salmon P. Chase, sixth Secretary of the Treasury, with the circular seal of the United States Treasury Department positioned to the left. The gold certificate obligation text is inscribed across the upper portion of the note, with the signatures of the Treasurer and Secretary of the Treasury appearing at the lower left and right respectively.

Reverse description Printed entirely in green on a white ground. The centre of the note carries bold intaglio lettering reading "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS", superimposed over a large pale green guilloche bearing the numeral "10,000". The denomination "10,000" is repeated in each of the four corners within ornate scrollwork borders that frame the entire design.
