John Paul II's beatification took place on May 1, 2011, in St. Peter's Square before an estimated crowd of 1.5 million people — the largest gathering in Rome since his funeral six years earlier. Poland issued this coin within months of that ceremony, one of several commemorative pieces the NBP produced across denominations to mark the occasion. The Vatican fast-tracked his cause with unusual speed; the normal five-year waiting period after death was waived by Benedict XVI.
At 93.30 grams of .9999 fine gold, this is among the heaviest coins the NBP has ever struck.
