| Obverse description | At centre, the crowned Polish eagle — the State Emblem of the Republic of Poland — rendered against a stylised decorative rosette in the field. The circumferential legend RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA arcs along the upper periphery. The denomination 1000 ZŁ and the date 2011, separated by a five-pointed star, appear along the lower periphery. The mintmark MW of the Mint of Poland is positioned beneath the eagle's left talon. |

John Paul II's beatification took place on May 1, 2011, in St. Peter's Square before an estimated crowd of 1.5 million people — the largest gathering in Rome since his funeral six years earlier. Poland issued this coin within months of that ceremony, one of several commemorative pieces the NBP produced across denominations to mark the occasion. The Vatican fast-tracked his cause with unusual speed; the normal five-year waiting period after death was waived by Benedict XVI.
At 93.30 grams of .9999 fine gold, this is among the heaviest coins the NBP has ever struck.
