Mongolia's transition from a Soviet satellite to an independent republic was still raw in 1992 — the People's Revolutionary Party had only relinquished its constitutional monopoly on power in 1990, and the country was issuing collector coinage aggressively as a hard-currency earner during a period of severe economic dislocation. This piece belongs to a lunar series produced almost entirely for export, with negligible domestic circulation.
