The United Nations turned 50 in 1995, and Mongolia had particular reason to mark the occasion: the country had been among the earliest non-founding members admitted, joining in 1961 after years of Soviet-backed applications blocked by a U.S.-supported Nationalist China veto. Admission finally came through a package deal that also seated Mauritania.
Mongolia issued a substantial number of commemorative silver pieces throughout the 1990s, many produced by foreign mints on contract — a common arrangement for smaller nations generating hard currency through collector sales rather than circulation.
