Issued as part of a broader commemorative program celebrating Uzbekistan's major cities, this piece honors Tashkent roughly eighteen years after Uzbek independence from the Soviet Union. The soʻm itself was introduced in 1994 to replace the transitional coupon currency that had briefly circulated after the ruble collapsed in the region — silver commemoratives of this type were never intended for circulation and exist purely as collector issues from the Central Bank's numismatic program.
