Somaliland has issued collector coins since the early 2000s despite remaining internationally unrecognized as a sovereign state — a self-declared republic that broke from Somalia in 1991 and has never received UN membership. These issues circulate entirely within the numismatic market rather than domestically, functioning as a revenue mechanism dressed in the trappings of statehood. The Year of the Horse release falls within a broader Chinese lunar series produced for Somaliland by outside minting contractors, almost certainly European, targeting the Southeast Asian collector market.
