| Aversbeschreibung | The national coat of arms of Uganda occupies the central field, featuring a traditional shield supported by a Uganda kob (antelope) to the left and a grey crowned crane to the right, with a scroll below bearing the national motto. Two crossed spears appear behind the shield, and a sun motif is depicted at the centre of the shield. The issuer legend 'BANK OF UGANDA' arcs along the upper periphery, the denomination '1000 SHILLINGS' is inscribed along the lower periphery, and the date appears divided on either side of the shield. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

| Reversbeschreibung | A naturalistically rendered adult gorilla (Gorilla beringei) is depicted in a seated frontal pose, cradling a small infant against its chest with both arms. The composition fills the majority of the central field, with fine line engraving conveying the texture of the animals' fur. The curved legend 'GORILLAS OF AFRICA' arcs prominently along the upper portion of the field. The design is set against a deeply mirrored proof field with a plain inner border. |

| Zusätzliche Informationen |
Uganda issued this piece as part of a broader wave of African wildlife-themed collector coinage that flooded the market in the early 2000s, largely produced by European minting houses on contract and sold through international distributors rather than through any domestic circulation channel. Bank of Uganda had minimal editorial control over many such issues; the coins were essentially wholesale numismatic product aimed at overseas collectors.
Silver-plated bronze was a deliberate cost-reduction choice that allowed the series to retail at accessible price points while maintaining the visual weight of a silver issue. Expect the plating on circulated or poorly stored examples to show separation at the rim first.
