Uganda issued this piece as part of a wave of late-1990s commemorative coinage produced largely for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. The denomination is Ugandan shillings, but the "2 Euro" designation references its nominal equivalence to the then-forthcoming European currency — a marketing hook used by several African mints and issuing authorities to attract European buyers ahead of the euro's 1999 launch. The coin never had legal tender status in any eurozone country.
