José I's reign saw the 1755 Lisbon earthquake obliterate much of the city, including the Casa da Moeda itself. Minting operations were disrupted and temporarily relocated, which accounts in part for the multiple die varieties catalogued across this issue's long production run — the KM sub-types reflect not stylistic whim but institutional upheaval.
