Obverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the central field, displaying the traditional escutcheon with the five quinas arranged in cross formation, each bearing five bezants, the whole surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate design. The denomination 1000 appears to the left of the shield within the legend, while three floral rosettes are disposed to the right of the shield in the field. A circular Latin legend runs along the entire periphery, separated from the central device by a plain inner border and an outer toothed milling.
