| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons each charged with five bezants in saltire) and the bordure of castles — set within a beaded inner circle. The royal crown surmounts the shield, its arches and ornamentation rendered in high relief. The circumferential legend reads IOANNES.V.D.G.P.ET.ALG.REX, separated by rosette stops, proclaiming João V as King of Portugal and the Algarves by the Grace of God. The denomination numeral 1000 appears to the left of the shield within the field. |

The Vila Rica mint — operating out of what is now Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais — was established in 1725 specifically to process the staggering gold output of the Brazilian interior before it could be smuggled out by bandeirantes and local operators evading the Portuguese quinto, the twenty-percent Crown levy. Striking coin on-site was the fiscal solution: taxed metal became coin before it left the region.
João V's 1000 réis from this mint covers a tight four-year window before the Vila Rica facility was shuttered in 1735 amid the political tensions that would eventually culminate in the Inconfidência Mineira decades later.
