The Vila Rica mint — operating out of what is now Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais — was established in 1725 specifically to process the staggering gold output of the Brazilian interior before it could be smuggled out by bandeirantes and local operators evading the Portuguese quinto, the twenty-percent Crown levy. Striking coin on-site was the fiscal solution: taxed metal became coin before it left the region.
João V's 1000 réis from this mint covers a tight four-year window before the Vila Rica facility was shuttered in 1735 amid the political tensions that would eventually culminate in the Inconfidência Mineira decades later.
