The Banco de Valladolid was one of the provincial emission banks briefly licensed under Spain's 1856 banking law, which authorized limited note-issuing rights outside Madrid in an attempt to stimulate regional credit. The experiment was short-lived — the Banco de España absorbed most provincial issuers by 1874, and circulation of these regional notes was always geographically constrained, legally limited to the issuing province.
At 1,000 reales de vellón, this is a high-denomination instrument from a bank with a modest capital base and a narrow catchment area. Few would have passed through ordinary commercial hands.
