| Obverse description | The obverse is framed by an elaborate engraved foliate and guilloche border. At centre, a crowned royal coat of arms is flanked on either side by serial number cartouches reading "Nº01549", with the denomination "MIL" set within a guilloche underprint panel below. The Banco de Valladolid was one of the provincial emission banks briefly licensed under Spain's 1856 banking law, which authorized limited note-issuing rights outside Madrid in an attempt to stimulate regional credit. The experiment was short-lived — the Banco de España absorbed most provincial issuers by 1874, and circulation of these regional notes was always geographically constrained, legally limited to the issuing province.
At 1,000 reales de vellón, this is a high-denomination instrument from a bank with a modest capital base and a narrow catchment area. Few would have passed through ordinary commercial hands.
