| Beschrijving keerzijde | The central field displays a detailed high-relief scene depicting the Surrender of Granada, showing a group of figures — soldiers and attendants — gathered before a fortified city gate, evoking the historical moment of 1492 when the Moorish kingdom of Granada was surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs. The scene is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The upper legend QUINTO·CENTENARIO arcs around the periphery, while the denomination 1000·PTAS appears along the lower arc, both separated by dot punctuation. The Madrid mint mark and an additional mintmaster mark are present at the sides of the lower field. The coin exhibits a proof finish with frosted devices against mirror fields. |

Issued to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the fall of Granada in 1492, this coin marks the event that completed the Reconquista — the centuries-long campaign to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Moorish rule. The fall of Granada to Ferdinand and Isabella occurred in the same year they dispatched Columbus westward, making 1492 one of the more consequential dates in Spanish history by any measure.
KM#837 was struck in a mintage of 60,000 pieces, relatively modest for a modern Spanish commemorative.
