Additional information

Issued to mark Spain's participation in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, this coin belongs to a broader Spanish commemorative program that ran across multiple denominations and years leading up to the games. Spain sent one of its larger delegations to Atlanta, finishing with a respectable medal count, but the games themselves are better remembered internationally for the Centennial Olympic Park bombing on July 27, 1996 — a domestic terrorist attack that killed two people and injured over a hundred during the festivities the coin was struck to celebrate.
