Issued by the Monetary Authority of Macao in the final stretch of Portuguese administration, this piece appeared just two years before the handover to China on 20 December 1999 — one of the last high-denomination gold issues produced under colonial governance. The Year of the Ox fell in 1997, the same year Hong Kong reverted to Chinese sovereignty, which lent the Macao issues of this period an unspoken urgency among collectors anticipating the end of the pataca's existing political framework.
