Gotha's municipal 1000 Mark note was issued deep into the hyperinflation spiral of 1923, when German cities and towns were forced to print their own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to keep local commerce functioning. The Reichsbank could not produce denominations fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power, so thousands of municipal and commercial issuers stepped in.
The Hofbuchdruckerei was the court printing house in Gotha, a city with a long publishing and cartographic history, which gave this issue a slightly more competent production quality than many comparable Notgeld pieces from smaller municipalities scrambling to use whatever printer was available.
