Obverse description Central field features the Romanian national coat of arms — a displayed eagle bearing a shield quartered with the emblems of the historic Romanian provinces, holding a cross in its beak — set within a decorative quatrefoil lozenge of finely engine-turned horizontal lines. The date 1999 is divided to either side of the central device. The legend ROMANIA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 LEI curves along the lower periphery, both rendered in bold raised lettering within a plain bordered rim.

Reverse description A large Latin cross dominates the central field, flanked by facing effigies of Pope John Paul II at left, vested in papal robes and mitre and raising his right hand in blessing while holding a pastoral staff, and Patriarch Teoctist of Romania at right, vested in patriarchal vestments and crown and holding a sceptre. Identifying inscriptions PAPA IOAN PAUL II and PATRIARHUL TEOCTIST appear below the respective figures. In the lower field, the papal arms appear at left and the Romanian coat of arms at right, each flanked by small cross ornaments. The curved legend VIZITA S.S. PAPA IOAN PAUL II IN ROMANIA arcs along the upper periphery, and the date 7-9 MAI 1999 is inscribed along the lower periphery.
