Sveinn Björnsson served as Iceland's first president following the country's formal declaration of independence from Denmark on June 17, 1944 — a date chosen deliberately to coincide with the anniversary of the 1944 Republic proclamation while Denmark remained under German occupation, ensuring no Danish interference was possible. He died in office in 1952, the only Icelander to hold the presidency during its founding decade.
The 1994 issue likely commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the republic.
