正面描述 Elaborate intaglio-engraved note in dark greenish-black ink on cream paper, with rich allegorical vignettes framing all four sides: angelic putti and classical figures in the upper border, reclining allegorical figures flanking the lower register, and seated figural groups at the lateral edges. The central field carries the large letterpress denomination mille francs in bold script, surmounted by the issuing authority heading BANQUE DE FRANCE and the branch designation SUCCURSALE DE MARSEILLE. Manuscript signatures, register references, and the handwritten date appear in the lower central area, with two circular cancellation stamps reading MARSEILLE 29 OCT 1921 ANNULÉ applied at left and right.

背面描述 The reverse mirrors the obverse engraving design, printed in reverse through the sheet, with the same elaborate allegorical border vignettes visible in counter-relief. The central zone shows the denomination mille francs and the BANQUE DE FRANCE heading in mirror image, the design being essentially the show-through of the intaglio-engraved obverse. A large circular watermark medallion is visible at centre left.

备注

The Type 1848 succursales notes were a modification of the original 1847 design, adapted for use at the Banque de France's provincial branch network — the succursales — which had expanded rapidly following the banking reforms of the late 1840s. The distinction matters: notes payable at Paris and those payable at a specific branch were legally distinct instruments, and the branch-payable versions circulated within tighter regional boundaries.

Jacques-Jean Barre was chief engraver at the Paris Mint, and his involvement here reflects the Banque's habit of drawing on Monnaie de Paris talent for its intaglio work. The watermark on cotton stock of this period was the primary — effectively the only — technical security layer.
