| Obverse description | The obverse is dominated by an elaborate intaglio-engraved composition in dark ink on plain paper. A central panel carries the bold script denomination 'mille francs' beneath the issuer heading 'BANQUE DE FRANCE' and the place and date line 'PARIS, le... IL SERA PAYÉ EN ESPÈCES À VUE, AU PORTEUR.' Flanking the central text are two large oval medallion vignettes framed by allegorical figures — seated female personifications with classical attributes to the left and right — while the upper border is filled with a frieze of cherubs, eagles, and ornamental scrollwork engraved by Barre, with serial numbers and control numerals in the four corners. |
