Obverse description Central design features a selectively gilt gecko (Gekkota sp.) depicted from above, with its dorsal surface rendered in high relief with intricate scaly texture and dark spotting highlighted against the gilding. The reptile is oriented diagonally across the field, its tail curving to the upper left and its forelimbs splayed outward. The background field is engraved with a sweeping vortex or spiral pattern interspersed with scattered geometric shapes — squares, triangles, and diamond forms — evoking a cosmic or microscopic environment against a antique-finished silver ground. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN arcs along the upper rim in Latin characters, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA, fineness specification 1 OZ 9999 ARGENT PUR, and date 2023 appear in the lower left field.

Additional information

Cameroon's wildlife coin program occupies a crowded market — dozens of mints produce African animal issues for the same collector base — but this gecko piece is struck under the authority of the BEAC (Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale), the regional central bank governing six CFA franc nations including Cameroon. The legal tender status is nominal; no 1000-franc coin circulates in the Cameroonian economy, where the highest circulating denomination is a fraction of that face value.

The selective gilding was applied post-striking, a finishing technique now routine at the Monnaie de Paris and several contracted European mints handling African sovereign issues.
