Niger adopted the CFA franc as its currency through membership in the West African Economic and Monetary Union, meaning this coin was issued by a state that conducts no independent monetary policy — the BCEAO in Dakar controls supply and rates. Collector issues like this one are among the few instruments through which member states can produce nationally branded coinage at all.
The fennec is native to the Sahara and is the national animal of neighboring Algeria, not Niger — an unusual choice for a Nigerien issue, though not unheard of in the themed silver programs produced for the collector market during this period.
