The Republic of the Congo entered the commemorative silver market aggressively in the 1990s, licensing its minting authority to European producers targeting thematic collectors rather than any domestic monetary need. These issues never circulated in Brazzaville — they were struck for the cabinet, not the pocket.
Roman cargo vessels, known as naves onerariae, were the workhorses of Mediterranean trade, capable of carrying up to 400 tonnes of grain, amphora, or building stone. The 1997 date places this among a cluster of Congolese issues from that decade now tracked primarily through Schön rather than KM coverage.
