Richard von Weizsäcker served as West German president from 1984 and became unified Germany's first president following reunification in 1990. His 1985 Bundestag speech directly naming May 8th as a day of liberation rather than defeat was considered politically courageous at the time and remains one of the most cited addresses in postwar German history. He died in 2015.
