Kyniska of Sparta, daughter of King Archidamos II, became the first woman to win at the ancient Olympic Games — not by competing directly, but by entering and funding a chariot team in 396 BC, then repeating the victory four years later. Sparta erected a bronze statue of her at Olympia, an honor rarely extended to anyone.
