Burkina Faso has no domestic mint and contracts its commemorative and bullion issues through European producers, with this piece almost certainly struck by the Bavarian State Mint or a comparable facility under licensing arrangements common to Franc CFA zone issues of the 2010s. The CFA franc itself is pegged to the euro under agreements dating to the colonial period, meaning Burkina Faso exercises no independent monetary policy — a continuing source of political friction, particularly after the 2014 coup that ousted Blaise Compaoré after 27 years in power, the same year this coin was issued.
