Gabon's franc CFA issues of this type were produced primarily for the collector market rather than domestic circulation — the CFA franc zone, managed through the Bank of Central African States, has never used silver coinage in everyday commerce. The 1000 CFA face value is nominal; the coin was struck under license arrangements common to small-nation commemorative programs, where a European mint contracts the design and production while the issuing country lends its name and legal tender status.
