The "1795" in this coin's title refers to the French Revolutionary calendar date corresponding to the abolition of slavery in the colonies — a decree issued by the National Convention on 4 February 1794 (16 pluviôse, Year II). Benin's use of this date is deliberate: the modern Republic sits on the territory of the former Kingdom of Dahomey, itself a significant participant in the Atlantic slave trade as a supplier rather than a victim. That tension is rarely acknowledged in the numismatic literature surrounding this issue.
The coin is part of a broader commemorative program issued under Benin's nominal authority but produced and marketed almost entirely by European distributors, a common arrangement for small-nation collector issues since the 1990s.
