The BCEAO issues commemorative silver coinage under licensing arrangements common to West African monetary unions, where the actual minting is contracted to European facilities — most often in France or Poland — rather than struck domestically. These pieces circulate in name only across the eight UEMOA member states, though in practice they are produced entirely for the collector market.
