| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse features a full-color applied enamel depiction of a Douglas DC-8 jetliner in Swissair livery, rendered in profile on an airport tarmac with a large terminal building and control tower visible in the background against a blue mountain range. The aircraft is detailed in white with a distinctive red fuselage stripe and the Swiss cross emblem on its tail fin. The curved legend L'HISTOIRE DE L'AVIATION arcs along the upper periphery in raised lettering against a dark field. The date range 1931 - 2001 is inscribed along the lower border, commemorating the operational history of Swissair, and the mintage year 2003 appears in small numerals within the left field. |

Benin has no air force to speak of and no historical connection to the Douglas DC-8 — this coin exists purely because the Republic of Benin became, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, one of the most prolific issuers of novelty collector coinage under arrangements with European trading houses, most notably the Pobjoy Mint and various Swiss and German intermediaries. The coins are legal tender in name only, struck for the international collector market with no expectation of domestic circulation.
The DC-8 itself entered commercial service with Delta and United in 1959, and remained in freighter use well into the 2000s.
