The 1000 Frank note was part of the series introduced through the 1990s as Belgium prepared for euro adoption — a currency already living on borrowed time at the moment of printing. Unusually for a note of this period, both design and engraving were handled entirely in-house by the bank's own Brussels atelier, a deliberate policy choice that had distinguished Belgian banknote production for decades and was quietly abandoned when the franc ceased to be legal tender on 28 February 2002.
The separation of engraving credits between obverse and reverse — Patricia Vouez and Ponsaers respectively — reflects how the Brussels workshop divided labor by specialization rather than by note.
