Beschrijving voorzijde The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a palm tree and flanked by two African grey parrots with wings displayed, serving as supporters. A five-pointed star surmounts the shield, and a scroll below bears the national motto rendered in three bands. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE arcs around the upper periphery, with the denomination 1000 DOBRAS inscribed across the upper field. Aanvullende informatie

Vasco da Gama never set foot on São Tomé — the islands served as a provisioning and slave-trading depot along the routes his voyages helped establish, not as a destination in themselves. By 1990, commemorative silver issues from small Lusophone nations had become a reliable hard-currency earner, with Banco Central contracting production largely for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. Few of these ever traded hands in São Tomé.
