| Descrizione del dritto | The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a palm tree and flanked by two African grey parrots with wings displayed, serving as supporters. A five-pointed star surmounts the shield, and a scroll below bears the national motto rendered in three bands. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE arcs around the upper periphery, with the denomination 1000 DOBRAS inscribed across the upper field. The date 1990 appears in the lower exergue, and the fineness mark .999 is visible at lower left. |

Vasco da Gama never set foot on São Tomé — the islands served as a provisioning and slave-trading depot along the routes his voyages helped establish, not as a destination in themselves. By 1990, commemorative silver issues from small Lusophone nations had become a reliable hard-currency earner, with Banco Central contracting production largely for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. Few of these ever traded hands in São Tomé.
