Above the shield a five-pointed star is prominently featured, and scrolls inscribed REPÚBLICA, PRÍNCIPE, and DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ appear around it. The motto scrolls DISCIPLINA, UNIDADE, and TRABALHO are rendered below the shield. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE arcs around the upper periphery, with the denomination 1000 DOBRAS inscribed beneath it, and the date 1990 appears at the bottom of the field.
