The pairing of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics with the Columbus quincentenary on a single issue from a tiny equatorial Atlantic archipelago is characteristically opportunistic — two unrelated anniversaries bundled to maximize collector appeal across separate thematic markets.
The islands themselves were uninhabited when Portuguese navigators reached them around 1470, making the Discovery theme at least geographically adjacent to São Tomé's own colonial origins.
