| Additional information |
São Tomé e Príncipe issued a clutch of commemorative 1000 Dobras pieces for the 1996 Atlanta Games, each dedicated to a different sport. This one covers Spain's Olympic participation — an unusual honorific for a small island nation with no particular sporting or diplomatic ties to Spain that would explain the choice. The series was almost certainly driven by a coin dealer or private mint with distribution rights, a common arrangement for small sovereign states seeking hard currency revenue from collector markets in the 1990s.
