Aanvullende informatie

Equatorial Guinea's 1980 royal visit commemoratives were issued to mark Juan Carlos I's trip to the country — one of the first visits by a Spanish head of state since independence in 1968, a relationship still raw given the brutal Macías Nguema dictatorship that had only ended with a coup in 1979. The bipkwele itself was a short-lived currency, replaced by the CFA franc in 1985 when Equatorial Guinea joined the Franc Zone.

This piece is a pattern or trial strike, catalogued under KM#Pn15, meaning it never entered circulation. Trial strikes in silver for this series are genuinely scarce — the country had virtually no domestic numismatic infrastructure, and such pieces were almost certainly produced by a foreign contract mint.
