China's Unicorn series, launched in 1994, targeted the high-end collector market at a moment when the People's Bank of China was aggressively expanding its bullion and numismatic export programs to generate hard currency. The platinum unicorn issues were produced in extremely limited quantities and distributed almost exclusively through foreign dealers — most never entered domestic circulation or even domestic hands.
The 1996 date is the third year of the series and carries a mintage reported at 1,500 pieces worldwide.
