Reverse description Central device depicts a draped maiden seated beside a recumbent Western unicorn, the mythological horse rendered with a single spiraling horn and adorned with a floral garland about its neck. The maiden, dressed in classical robes and wearing a floral crown, rests one hand gently upon the unicorn's back amid a bed of roses and foliage in the lower field. The legend 吉祥物麒麟 (Auspicious creature qilin) arcs along the upper left in Chinese characters, while the word UNICORN appears in Latin capitals along the upper right. The denomination 100元 is inscribed to the left of the central group, and the Shenyang Mint mark (circled P) appears to the lower right.

Additional information

China's Unicorn series, launched in 1994, targeted the high-end collector market at a moment when the People's Bank of China was aggressively expanding its bullion and numismatic export programs to generate hard currency. The platinum unicorn issues were produced in extremely limited quantities and distributed almost exclusively through foreign dealers — most never entered domestic circulation or even domestic hands.

The 1996 date is the third year of the series and carries a mintage reported at 1,500 pieces worldwide.
