H.H. Kung — Confucius's 75th-generation descendant, Harvard-educated, and brother-in-law to Chiang Kai-shek — signed this note as Governor of the Central Bank of China during a period of genuine monetary restructuring. The 1935 fabi reform, which nationalized silver and replaced it with managed paper currency, gave notes like this one their legal footing. Waterlow & Sons produced the plates in London, a common arrangement for Chinese nationalist issues that required security printing beyond domestic capacity.
Within a decade, hyperinflation had rendered the entire fabi system worthless — by 1949, the yuan had collapsed so completely that this note's face value was functionally meaningless years before it left circulation.
