The Bank of Pei Hai was a communist-controlled regional bank operating in the Shandong-Bohai base area during the civil war period. Its notes circulated alongside — and in deliberate competition with — Nationalist currency, with the CCP actively promoting their paper as the legitimate medium of exchange in territories under their control. The 100 Yuan denomination was substantial for everyday transactions in 1946, reflecting the inflationary pressure already undermining Nationalist-issued currency and giving communist-zone notes a practical appeal.
The bank was ultimately absorbed into the People's Bank of China at its founding in 1948, and Pei Hai notes were retired shortly after.
