Four Chinese seal-script characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 直百五銖 (Zhi Bai Wu Zhu), meaning 'Straight Hundred Wu Zhu,' indicating a nominal value of one hundred wu zhu. The character to the left of the hole appears in an archaic, angular script style, while additional strokes or a secondary mark are visible to the left of the square perforation in the field. |
