Mongolia has issued commemorative coins depicting World Heritage Sites from across the globe since the early 2000s, a program driven less by cultural connection than by the collector market for colorized novelty issues. Chichen Itza was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a 2007 public poll — the timing making this 2008 issue an obvious commercial response to that renewed international attention.
