The Banco Central del Ecuador had been issuing sucre-denominated notes through ABNC for decades by the time this series appeared, a relationship that stretched back to the 1940s. By 1980, Ecuador was riding an oil boom that had begun following its entry into OPEC in 1973, and high-denomination notes like this were increasingly common in daily commerce as inflation eroded the currency's purchasing power through the decade.
