Kyrgyzstan's first banknote series, introduced in May 1993, replaced the Russian ruble following independence — the som itself had been rushed into production partly because the ruble zone was collapsing faster than anticipated. The 100 Som was the highest denomination in that inaugural series, printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company in Ottawa.
The watermark on these early issues is a simple repeated pattern, modest by contemporary security standards. CBN-printed Kyrgyz notes from this period are occasionally found with slightly uneven ink distribution on darker tonal areas — a known characteristic of the run, not a defect.
