Austria's commemorative 100-Schilling silver program, running through the 1970s, was tied directly to the country's postwar effort to rebuild cultural identity through coinage — a deliberate policy choice by the republic's finance ministry rather than any single curatorial impulse. Hohensalzburg Fortress, begun by Archbishop Gebhard von Helffenstein in 1077, is one of the largest fully preserved medieval castles in Europe and had been state property since the Habsburg dissolution.
The .640 fineness was a compromise adopted by the Austrian Mint in 1959 to manage rising silver prices while keeping the commemorative program financially viable. It remained the standard alloy for the series through the late 1970s.
